Ruby Hall Clinic Enables Remote Consultation With Doctors on Mobile, Improving Lives of Post-Operative Patients


Aurangabad-based Sonal Phadke (name changed) recently underwent a surgery in Pune. She had to regularly visit her hospital for post-operative check-up sessions. Often, she had to be referred from one facility to another to receive treatment and keep doctors updated of their day-to-day development. Today, she can consult the doctor in Pune and get treatment and advice from the comfort of her home in the village.

“Being a pioneer in the quality healthcare service, Ruby Hall Clinic receives patients from remote parts of India and abroad. It was observed that post surgery, patients visit the hospital for follow-up checks and have to take the pain to travel which can be avoided if there is a way to connect the physician with the patient,” says Anand Patil, General Manager - IT, Ruby Hall Clinic.

How Does Remote Consultation Work?

The procedure takes place through a smart phone. Doctors are able to connect with patients remotely and provide consultation through high quality video service. Moreover, the novel facility introduced by Ruby Hall Clinic facilitates monitoring of vital parameters, history and profile. The data is stored and transmitted to caregivers, who can monitor and respond appropriately.

Using Ruby Hall’s preferred vendor’s eConsult service and EMR an appointment between the doctor and the patient is fixed.  A link is then sent on the mobile phone of both the doctor and the patient. The physician connects with the patient in a secure environment and provides consultation. Details of consultation are documented for future reference. The historical data of the patient is already available with the physician in the EMR which helps him/her during the consultation.

“eConsult is a robust configurable system. A few configurations were done to enable the team of physicians and doctors to have remote consultations. eConsult schedules were created for remote patients and the project team involving clinical personnel did the trial consultations before taking the system live,” says Patil.

Secure and Private Communication Between Doctor and Patient

“Confidentiality has to be an inalienable component, otherwise the trust between a patient and a doctor can break down, leading to miscommunication or worse no communication at all. The eConsult solution is secure and HIPAA compliant. The consultation happens between the patient and the physician over a secure https layer,” assures Patil.

Direct, double encrypted conversations are facilitated between doctors and patients through a phone, ruling out confidentiality concerns. As a result, the project has gained wide publicity and popularity.

“Currently we are running this as a pilot service. Looking at the usefulness and response, we aim to maximize the use of this service and create a full blown telemedicine solution,” adds Patil.

Every day many lives are being saved and the quality of life enhanced for patients through use of innovative technology. This initiative of Ruby Hall has been recognized and Anand Patil has been shortlisted by DynamicCIO for his innovative efforts.
